Arvada Area Schools

 

First School in Arvada was built in the early 1800's on the Wolff Homestead, just North of Clear Creek, and near Wadsworth Ave and Juchem Lane (now Garrison Street).

Second School, a two room brick built in 1882 was located at 5060 Wadsworth Ave. Only elementary grades were maintained until 1899.

Next school, Arvada Grade School, presently (1968)  named Lawrence Elementary School, built in 1903 and expanded in 1948, held classes from the 5th grade through high school. The 1st to the 4th grades were moved to Lawrence School when the high school (now Arvada Junior High School) was built in 1921.

 

 

NORTH AND WEST OF ARVADA

Leyden, a coal mining township of the 1870's had a frame building for a school. This building is still standing and is now used as a residence.

The village of Semper was laid out in 1866 and its one story frame building is still standing at 93rd Ave. and Teller St.

In same North Wadsworth area, one and two-room frame buildings served Lorraine and Mandalay Gardens.

The original school in the Fremont area was built across Ralston Road from the present Fremont School in the middle 1860's and was called Grant School).

In 1891, the first portion of the present school was constructed. This two-room, brick building was called Fremont School for the first time. In 1948, an addition was made to this school. Since reorganization in 1950, several additions have been placed on this school.

Old Ralston School, located approx. 68th and Indiana Street (east side), was construct in the early 1900's. This was removed and converted into a temporary classroom building in 1956.

Denver View is still located at 80th Ave. and Simms Street. It reverted to the original owner and has been used as a church for the past decade.

Wagner, is one of five old wood frame schools that was converted into temporary classrooms during the fall of 1956. The site, at 96th Ave. and Alkire Str., reverted to its original owner.

Lathrop was another wood frame structure, located at 80th and Carr Str., which was converted into a temporary classroom in 1956.
