MEMORIAL IS HELD FOR KIRK SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION
Sergeant Emmett W. Wise Made the Supreme Sacrifice in Battle on Leyte Island.A memorial for Technical Sergeant Emmett W. Wise was held at Kirk Sunday afternoon, January 7, in the high school auditorium conducted by the V.F.W.
Sergeant Wise, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Wise, San Francisco, California, was killed October 23 in action on Leyte. Emmett entered the armed forces in 1941 and went overseas in July 1943. He saw action in the invasion of Kiska and on Kwajalein atoll before participating in the Philippine invasion where he he gave his last full measure of devotion to the cause of freedom and democracy. He was an intelligent young man with a high appraisal of the virtues of life and was only too willing to give of his best in the service of his country. The heroic lives that such men as Sergeant Wise sacrifice will long be remembered by a grateful nation.
Two other sons of Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Wise are in the service of their country, Sergeant Gilbert E. Wise has been in the Hawaiian theater of operations and the two brothers met there after being separated two and a half years. Another brother, Perry James Wise is an aviation ordnance mechanic in the Navy.
Emmett Walter Wise was born August 27, 1918 in Yuma County near Kirk. He grew to manhood on his father's farm in the Kirk community and attended grammar school at Kirk. He was graduated with the class of 1937. Emmett was president of his class and active in athletics during his four years of high school. Upon graduation he moved to Denver where he was employed until his induction into the Army, March 5, 1941.
He received his basic training at Camp Roberts, California, later serving in various camps on the west coast. While he was stationed at Bernicia, California, he met Willa LaVee of Napa who later became his wife. A son, Dennis Norwood, was born to them on March 29, 1943.
After having been promoted to Staff Sergeant, Emmett was sent overseas in July 1943. He was first sent to the Aleutian Islands, and took part in the invasion of Kiska. After leaving the Aleutians his outfit went to Hawaii and it was here he met his brother, Gilbert E. Wise. While at Hawaii he was promoted to Technical Sergeant in December 1943. He took part in the invasion of the Marshall Islands and in the capture of Kwajalien atoll and was awarded a certificate of proficiency in jungle warfare.
Emmett was fighting with the 7th Infantry Division in the invasion of Leyte, where he was killed in action on October 23, 1944 at the age of 26 years, one month and twenty-six days.
Sergeant Wise is survived by his wife and son of Napa, California, his father and mother, one sister, two brothers, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Wise of Yuma, and many other relatives and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Wise and their daughter, Mrs. H.S. Meadows, arrived December 31 at their home near Kirk from San Francisco, California to hold the memorial service for their son.
A huge crowd was present to pay their last tribute of love and respect to one of our nation's heroes. The memorial was conducted, at the request of the family, by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post no. 3378. This was the thirty-first memorial conducted by that organization.
