Delbert E. Jewell killed in action on Luzon January 30
Pvt. Jewell, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jewell, who live eight miles south of Yuma

Again we are called upon to report that another fateful message from the War Department reached this community Tuesday, when Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jewell, living eight miles south of Yuma, received a message saying that their son had been killed in action on Luzon, January 30. The telegram was addressed to his wife at Yuma, and since she is in Tacoma, Washington, was delivered to the parents - the telegram parents of the entire country pray will not be delivered to their door - "February 20, The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your husband, Private Delbert E. Jewell, was killed in action on the 30th of January on Luzon. Confirming letter follows. J.A. Ulio, Adjutant General"

Delbert E. Jewell was born June 11, 1923, south of Yuma and he resided in the same community until his induction into the Army on September 28, 1943. He was sent to the Pacific theatre of war in March 1944 and was located on New Guinea and New Britain Island until he went to Luzon. The last letter received by the family was written about January 10, on Luzon, and the action there was his first engagement in actual battle as far as the family know.

Besides his parents, Luella VanMetre Jewell, four sisters, Mrs. Don McCall, Mrs. Ilene Wittlake, Jacky and Wanda of the home, and one brother, Jimmy also of the home. The wife went to Tacoma, Washington, about three months ago, and is employed in the shipyards.
