Dwayne was the only child of James D. "Dave" and Silver C. (Greene) Anderson of Greeley. Grandson of Katie (Keller) Greene Nevin of Vernon and nephew of John K. Greene, Edwin J. Greene, George W. Greene and Hannah (Greene) Soper.

Notes:

Dave Anderson and Silver Greene were both from the Vernon area and lived south of Vernon after they were married in 1921. Their only child, Marvin Dwayne, was born near Vernon. The family moved to Weld County before 1930 where Dave Anderson had found work with the county. Dwayne was raised and attended school in the Fort Lupton/Greeley area.

Dwayne was one of the 645 crewmen lost when the escort carrier USS Liscome Bay was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine, I-175, early in the morning of 24 Nov 1943. The Liscome Bay was the flagship of a three carrier task group (Liscome Bay (CVE-56), Coral Sea (CVE-57) and Corregidor (CVE-58)) commanded by Rear Adm. H.M. Mullinnix providing close air support for the Marine landings on Tarawa and Makin Islands that had started 20 Nov. The Liscome Bay caught fire and sank less than 25 minutes after taking a torpedo in the engine room. Only 272 of her crew were rescued.

It was the Liscome Bay's first war cruise. She was commissioned 7 Aug 1943 at Vancouver, Washington and after working up and picking up her aircraft squadrons at San Diego she arrived in Pearl Harbor 28 Oct where she joined the Gilberts invasion force. The task force sailed 10 Nov 1943.

The Liscoe Bay received a battle star for the Gilberts invasion.

The Liscome Bay (CVE-56) was the second ship in the 50 ship Casablana (CVE-55) class of escort carriers built on Liberty ship merchant hulls. Coral Sea and Corregidor were the third and fourth ships in the class. They were also commissioned in Aug 1943 and reached Pearl about a week before the task force sailed.
