Eckley Government



April 1921 "The Board of Trustees met as required by law at the usual meeting place at Catchpole's office on Wednesday evening of last week. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Shea, after which the roll was called, one member only being absent.
The minutes of the last regular, adjourned, and special meetings were read by City Clerk, W. L. Shannon. Several bills against the village were taken care of during the eveuing. The matter of changing the regular meeting place of the Board was taken up and a resolution to this effect was introduoed and carried unanimously.
The resolution is vs follows:
Besolved: Whereas, a motion in the minutes of the meeting of of March 3, 1921, in Ordinance No. 1 relative to a change in the meeting place of the Board of Trustees of Eckley, Colorado was ill-advised.
Besolved: That whereas it is thought best to change the meeting place of the Board of Trustees of Eckley, Colorado, from the present designated meeting place - Catchpole & Catchpole's office - to quarters tendered by the Commercial Club in their Club RoomS, it is therefore,
Resolved: That the former motion of March 2, 1921, is vacated and rescinded and that under the provisions of Ordinance No. 1 it is
Resolved: That Hereafter the meeting place of the Board of Trustees of the Town of Eckley be the Commercial Club Rooms , in the Ezra Wiseler (should be Wissler) building.
Some discussion was had relative to the proposed electric light and water plants, but nothing definite will be known until after the estimate are compared, bonds sold and other preliminary matters have been disposed of.
The Fire Zone Ordinance ...passed, and other minor items usually and other minor items before a meeting of this kind, were given due consideration.
E. B. Bimmons, of Wray, city attorney for Eckley, was preaant and acted in an advisory position to the Beard.
The next regular meeting of the Board will be held May 4 at their new quarters. "

March 1928 " The Tribune last week made a mistake in the line-up of candidates on the Citizens' ticket;.. W. C. Godsey should have been named in place of P. R. Taylor. Mr. Tayior was tendered a place on the Peoples' Independent ticket but declined the nomination, and Dr. G. D. Hoschouer has been put in his place.
George Rice, following; earnest solicitation of the vacancy committee of the Ctizens' party, decided to run as mayor, reported in last week's Tribune as having refused, but changing his mind since the article was published.
This makes the lineup of the twv» as follows: Citizens; George Rice, mayor, W C. Godsey, M. A. Sewell and B. F. Boggs, trustees for two years; C. L. Mason, trustee for one year.
People's Independent: H. C. Catchpole, mayor; Dr. Hoschouer, A. E. Shea and W. C. Godsey, trustees two year terms; Jap Morris, trustee, one year term.

At Yuma Arthur C. Ashford is the candidate for mayor, Rose Finkbeineit for town treasurer, and W. J. Chrismer, J. W. Gardner and H. M. Hancock for town trustees on the Democratic-Republican ticket.
On the Citizens' ticket, G. H. Hatcher is named as mayor, Miss Finkbeiner as town treasurer, and E. H. Anderson, E. Loring and R. E. Runion as trustees.

A. E. Tabor was endorsed by both caucuses at Wray last week as a candidate for mayor. Candidates for trustees on the Law and Order ticket are A. H. Borland, M. M. Fisk and John Dalrymple.
On the Citizens' ticket, T. Barr Groves, E. F. Hilbert and F. H. Hesse were named as trustees.

March 1932 "The Eckley town council Tuesday night renewed a revised contract with the town of Yuma for electricity for a term of ten years. After accepting the contract, the mayor of Eckley congratulated members of the Yuma council, who were at the meeting, for making the recent improvements at the local power plant and for the splendid service given consumers during the past."

April 1946 " The Citizens Party Caucus was held last Thursday night ror the purpose of placing in nomination names of mayor and six trustees for the town of Eckley, to be voted on at the town election April 7.
W. 0. Godsey, our present mayor was nominated, and Duncan Boggs, Art Cain, Orn Frenc,. Cosby Mcßeath, D. C. Crane and S. Nash were nominated for trustees."

March 1956 "A spirited municipal election is shaping up at Eckley for the regular town election to be held on Tuesday, April 3. There are two full slates of candidatee for the six councilmen seats. Carl Walters, endorsed by the Peoples Independence party, is unopposed for mayor.
The Citizens party candidates for trustees are Bert Adamson, Donald Murphy, R. G. Prather, Keith Probasco, Earnest H. Smith and Floyd Thomas.
On the Peoples Independence ticket are J. A. Cain, W. F. Cain, F. K. Hall, H. W. Riffle, O. A. Van Meter and A. C. Yenter."

March 1968 "Eckley Mayor Carl Walthers reported last week there is little interest in the town election to be held Tuesday, April 2. Walthers is running unopposed for Mayor.
Six candidates for trustees appear on the official town ballot it was reported by Town Clerk Jesse A. Coffman. The six men are: William F. Cain, J. Arthur Cain, Seward B. Gilbert, Chester A. McCoy, Keith E. Probanco and Bee Williams. There are six seats on the town board.
All terms of office in the election are for a two year period. Voting will be at the town hull with the polls open from 7 a. m. until 7 p. m. April 2.
Retiring from the board of trustees will be: Merle Collins, Paul Eastin and F. K. Hall."

March 1974 "Gary D. Stroup and Carl E. Walthers will be battling for the office of Mayor for the Town of Eckley during a forth coming election set for Tuesday, April 9.
All voting will be done at the Eckley City Hall with polls open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. W. C. Godsey, present Mayor of Eckley, will not run for re-election.
The newly elected Mayor will take office April 9 and serve for a two-year term. Six new trustees will also be elected during voting with a big slate of candidates.
Present Trustees John E. Turvey, Chester A. McCoy, Seward L. Gilbert and Max A. Brown are running for reelection.
New candidates seekingoffice are Harry Tuell, John Owens, Gary Newton, Myron E. New, Howard Morgan, Rufus H. Forbes and Harold Chase.
Town Clerk J. A. Coffman expects a large turnout of voters for this year's election."

April 1976 "Max A. Brown, who filled a term as Mayor of Eckley replacing Carl Walthers a year ago, was elected Mayor during an election of the Town of Eckley Tuesday in a heavy vote with 114 ballots cast.
In winning the top political job in the Town of Eckley, Brown received 79 votes. Town Clerk J. A. Coffman released voting figures Tuesday evening.
Two other candidates appeared on the ballot seeking the office of Mayor. Gaylord Stevens received 24 votes and Mary Lou orbes 48 votes and Seward L. Gilbert also 48 5 votes.
The new Mayor and Trustees will all be serving two-year terms and will take office immediately."

April 1980 "Max A. Brown was re-elected Mayor of the Town of Eckley during an election held Tuesday, April 1. Brown was unopposed and will be serving another two-year term. He received 58 votes.
Elected Town Trustees during the voting were Kenneth L. Jones 71 votes, Judith Turvey 70 votes, Harold Blackham 61 votes, Richard Byers 54 votes, Robert Steward 47 votes and Edwin E. Ekberg 45 votes. Other candidates for Trustee and their votes were Monte Maple 44, Leland Capps 34, Dorthy Cox 31 and Marilu C. Scrivner 18 votes.
The six Trustees will all be serving two-year terms of office.
A total of 88 voters made it to the polls in the election. "
