August 14, 1947 "Viola Bell Poplin, daughter of Robert George Poplin and Jerusha Chase Poplin, was born Sept. 18, 1860, near Corydon, Ia., where she spent her girlhood days, joining the Methodist church when she was 14 years of age. She was a firm believer in that doctrine throughout her life.
There in Iowa she was given in marriage to J. W. Stevens, Oct. 14, 1877. To this union were born four boys and one girl: Jesse C. Stevens of Colorado Springs, Robert Stevens of Denver, Wilburn Stevens of Eckley; the daughter Fay Stevens passed away at the age of 21 years, and one son Roy died in infancy. In the spring of 1888 the Stevens family came to Yuma Co., Colo., from Laddonia, Mo. They settled on a homestead south of Eckley. Mr. Stevens died in 1916 and in 1918 Mrs. Stevens moved to Eckley. She has known the hardships and the joys of pioneer days. There were few people in Yuma county when she came, and few neighbors. Perhaps that is one reason why she has remained such a good neighbor through the years, known to many people as 'Grandma Stevens.' For some time she has been in poor health, and became very sick two weeks ago. She died Saturday, August 9, 1947 at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 21 days.
Besides her three sons, she leaves eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p. m., in the Eckley church with Rev. Moore Bell officiating. Interment was in the Eckley cemetery. The Rattler extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives."
