near Shenandoah, lowa, on February 28, 1879. He died at Colorado Springs,
Colorado, November 25, 1949.
The family lived for a number of years in Iowa, then a short time at Laddonia, Missouri.
In 1887 they came to Colorado and settled on the farm south and a little
east of Eckley. In July, 1898, he married Nettie Wakefield.
To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Leora Jones of Husted, Colo. Mr. Stevens was well known here.
For thirty years he carried mail on the rural route out from Vernon, but
for the past ten or fifteen years he has been in failing health.
Mr. Stevens was divorced, and sometime iater married Mrs. Clover Geers.
In addition to his wife and his daughter, he leaves two brothers:
Wilburn Stevens of Eckley and Robert Stevens of Denver,
three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren;
a number of nieces and nephews with other more distant relatives
and friends. A sister died in 1914, and his father in 1916.
Only two years ago in August his mother preceded him in death.
The funeral service was at two o'clock Sunday in the Eckley Community Church, with burial in the Eckley Cemetery. Rev. Moore Bell preached and the Law Mortuary of Colorado Springs was in charge.
Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the services were his
wife, Mrs. Jesse Stevens, of Colorado Springs; Mrs. Iris Howell of
Cheyenne; Clarence L. Saunders of Colorado Springs;
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jones and Darrell of Husted;
Mrs. Virginia Bruce and Irene of Colorado Springs;
Robert Stevens and grandson Dennis Hall of Denver;
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Taylor of Holyoke. "
Jesse's wife Clover is inscribed on Jesse's tombstone in the Eckley cemetery. She might never have
lived in Yuma County, but is so interesting that we put a page on her.

"Josephine Marchena Ham Zemmer passed on March 22. She was born in Colorado Springs to Joseph and Clover Ham. She traveled by covered wagon from Colorado to Idaho. She married Finley Zemmer in 1939.
She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed sewing and gardening. She’s made quilts that have been sent all over the world. Among her other accomplishments, Jo was a published author. Her autobiography, “Three Generations of Resilient Women” is a 5-star rated book on Amazon.com.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Finley, and her sons; Tim and Mark Zemmer and her mother Clover Ham.
She is survived by daughters; Mildred Jennings of St. Helens and Wilda Eberly of Columbia City, 5 grandchildren; Harold Jennings of St. Helens, Shelly Thompson of Vancouver, Sherrie Payne of Albany, Ronda Smith of LaCenter, Glenda Zemmer of Seattle, and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren."
"In 1872, Malissa Hixson Gorrell left Ohio with her infant daughter to join Malissa's husband,
Joseph Gorrell, on the homestead he had established on the Kansas frontier.
After Joseph's death soon thereafter, Malissa remarries and discovers that Joe Hahn
is a man always searching for riches, moving to the edge of the American frontier.
Malissa lives a life of wandering with her second husband and her expanding family
which eventually includes 6 sons and 7 daughters, with two dying as infants.
Three Generations of Resilient Women tells the life stories of Malissa (1850-1927),
her daughter-in-law Clover (1894-1990), and Clover's daughter Josephine (1914- ).
Clover and Josephine are the narrators of the saga. Common threads are woven across the
three generations. All three women shared a strong love of family, courage in the face
of tragedy, and the physical and emotional strength to cope with the difficult
circumstances they encountered. They spent much of their lives traveling,
looking for a safe place to prosper and raise their families. Much of their 'housekeeping' was
done while living in a tent or primitive cabin. Each was sufficiently self-reliant to keep
their families fed and clothed with minimal resources. They rarely had medical assistance for
childbirth or serious illnesses and injuries. These pioneer women demonstrate the determination
and resilience that was the foundation of the women who opened the West. They prepared the way
for independent women of our generation by offering an example to daughters everywhere."
