Fred L. and Minnie (Palmer)Shadduck, Charles G. Shadduck, Vernon

HIRAM SHADDUCK, farmer, P. O. North East, Erie County, Pennsylvania, was born in Greenfield Township, this county, January 14, 1826; son of Joseph and Betsy (Willard) Shadduck, who had eighteen children.
Those surviving are George, Henry, Esther, Nancy, Hannah, Polly, Ann, Lester and Hiram, our subject. Joseph Shadduck had been previously married to Harriet Cass, who bore him Ira, now eighty-four years, the first white male child born in the county; Betsy (deceased), David, and Matilda, who was killed on her way to church by a horse, in Corry. Joseph had in all twenty-two children and 306 grandchildren. He came to Erie County in 1783, and was one of the first settlers in Greenfield Township, took up 460 acres of Government land at $1.25 per acre, and bought 100 acres more near North East. He suffered all the hardships of a pioneer's life, first clearing away one acre on which he lived. He baked his bread (composed of flour and water only) and meat by roasting them in the fire on the end of a stick. He had to build his hog-pens high and strong to keep out bears and other wild animals. One day he found a bear eating his dinner; seizing his gun, he soon dispatched Bruin, and so supplied his larder with fresh meat. He departed this life in 1849, and his personal property brought the large sum of $16,000.

Hiram, our subject, was married at Colt's Station, this township, by Squire Mervin, and has eleven children living and one dead, viz.: Mary E., wife of E. Bower (has five children -- May, Davy, Jennie, Edney and Mark); (Edward Bauer and Mary are in Chautauqua County, New York in 1880 and 1900. In 1900 Edward Bauer is 59, Mary 51, Dave 25, Mark 20, Edna 19, and Hiram 13."
"Edward F. BAUER Died Sept. 6, 1921 of Brights disease at the home of his daughter Mrs George SKELLIE in Findley Lake NY born Feb 16, 1841 at Greenfield , (*Erie Co) PA . He enlisted in the Civil War in the 82nd PA Regiment; He United in marriage October 18, 1869 with Mary Ellen SHADDUCK of Greenfield PA; 6 children were born to them Mrs. GEORGE SKELLIE of Mina David and Hiram BAUER of Findley Lake Mrs. Frank THORE of Wesleyville PA Dr. Mark Bauer of Delaware Ohio Mrs. Edna BARMORE -Esler P. Barmore Mrs. BAUER died last October, Mrs. BARMORE died last November Internment in Mina Cemetery"
Eliza, wife of Wm. Keeler (has an adopted child, Arthur); Josephine, wife of W. Wellington (has one daughter, Blanche); Polly, wife of F. Moore (has one child, Arthur); John J., Lincoln, Fred L., Ethalina, wife of J. Lathrop (has one child, Ellen); Charles, Maud and Mertie, the youngest, who has kept the family record.
As an instance of what unselfish devotion will accomplish, we record the following: When Joseph Shadduck was lying ill, in the depth of one winter, with the snow six feet deep, his wife, Betsy, had to crawl on her hands and knees a distance of half a mile to procure potatoes sufficient to keep the family from starving. She had a large stock of cattle to attend to, and had to crawl to the creek to get them watered.

In 1880 Erie County, Pennsylvania Hiram 52 and Mary J. Shadduck have Lincoln, 19, Fred 17, Effie 15, Charles 12, Maud 10, and Mirtle 9.

The 1890 gazetteer has a J. L. Shadduck and F.L. Shadduck, both of Oak township.

September 28, 1893 Fred applied for a marriage license in Thayer County, saying he lived in Arapahoe County, Colorado, father Hiram Shadduck, mother Mary Burch. Minnie Palmer was from Nuckolls County, Nebraska, father Millard Palmer, mother Ellen Crandell

In 1880 Nuckolls County, Millard and Sarah E. Palmer are both 27, with Minie C. 5, mary M. 4, and Eliza A. 2.

In 1885 Nuckolls County, Millard and Sarah are 32, with Minnie 11, Mary M. 8, Elma A. 6, Walter 4, Emma L. 2 and Leroy one month.

Fred proved up a quarter in 27, 1S 45W in 1897 - same time as Dickson, York, Foreman, Prickett, Soules.

1899 Wray "F. L. Shadduck has shaken the dust off his feet and left for Neb. but thinks he will be back in the spring."

In 1900 Nuckolls County Fred - Oct 1867 is a day laborer, with Minnie April 1875 Nebraska. They have Rosy Sept 1895 Colorado. So they moved back and forth between Nebraska and Yuma County.

In 1910 Vernon precinct Frederick L. Shadduck is 46, born Pennsylvania, with Minnie 34, Nebraska. They have Rosa, 14, Colorado, Millard 9, Leslie 4, and William J. 1 - all three boys born in Nebraska.

May 1912 "Ray Campbell and C. A. Prickett and the Misses Iva, Eva and Hazel Prickett and Rosy Shadduck attended Sunday school one mile north of Happyville last Sunday."

December 1912 "Miss Rosa Shadduck came in from Superior, Nebr., yesterday to spend the winter with her parents, F. L. Shadduck and wife, of Vernon."

Millard Palmer is also in Yuma County in 1910, widowed, 56 born in Wisconsin, living with son Walter H. Palmer 29.

1911 "Mrs. Walter Palmer visited in Happyville Wednesday.. Walter Palmer is putting down a well for Mr. Ford this week."

July 1911 "Walter Palmer's big sale was held Friday, and he and his wife will leave for Missouri Tuesday, where they will make their future home."
December 1911 "Walter Palmer is here from Missouri to gather the corn crop on his homestead west of Vernon."

January 1912 "Walter Palmer, who has been back looking after his homestead east of here, has sold out to George Wheeler and will leave for Missouri in about a week."

February 1912 "H. B. Campbell has been helping Walter Palmer this week to get his business closed up in this county. Mr. Palmer started for his new home in Missouri Friday."

Walter is a blacksmith in Kansas in 1920, with Lucy M. 41 born in Missouri. Thomas 8 was born in Missouri, Juanita six months old in Kansas.
- Walter 1880-1964 # 56179237 is buried in Crawford County, Kansas, with Lucy M. (Powell) Palmer 1878-1941 # 67179236. Son Thomas M. Palmer 1911-2003 is also buried in the Hepler Cemetery.

February 1913 Fred Shadduck of four miles west of Vernon will hold a public sale on next Monday, March 3. Mr. Shadduck will move to Superior, Nebraska, this coming spring."

In 1920 Fred and Minnie are back in Nuckolls County, and Maude Place, 50, widowed sister, is with them.

Rosa is married to Wallie Brandt, 39, and they're in Dawson County, Nebraska in 1920. She's 23, with no kids. They're in the 1925 Republic County, Kansas census.

In 1930 "Willey E" and Rose M. are in Republic County, Kansas, with Lola M. and Beryl F. 7. In 1940 they're still there, with Fala Mae 19, Beryl F. 16, and brother Leslie H. 33.

In 1938 a legal notice in the Belleville newspaper mentions "Charlie Shadduck and Nora Shadduck, his wife; Hattie Smith and Smith, her husband; Effie Lathrop and Lathrop. her husband."

Fred Leslie Shadduck - Aug 4, 1863 - August 11, 1949 and Minnie Olive (Palmer) Shadduck 1875-1955 are buried in Washington Cemetery, Belleville, Kansas.

August 18, 1949 "Fred Leslie Shadduck, son of Hiram and Mary Jane Shadduck, was born October 4, 1862, at Erie, Pennsylvania and died at his home in Belleville on August 11, 1949, at the age of 86 years, 10 months. He was united in marriage to Minnie Olive Palmer at Hebron, Nebraska, and to them were born.... died in infancy. Mr. Shadduck was a member of the ...church ... until he moved to ... where he became a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church. He was a faithful member and attended regularly as long as his health permitted. Survivors are his wife, three sons: Millard of Republic, Leslie of Belleville and William of California.a daughter, Mrs. Rose Brant of Belleville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters; Effie Lathrop of Ithaca, N. Y., Mrs. Myrtle Smith of Coronado, Cal., a brother, Charley of Montrose, Colo., severa1 nieces and nephews and a host.."

November 3, 1949 Belleville "Mrs. Fred Shadduck returned to Belleville Wednesday with her son, Leslie, after spending a few days it her home and with Mr. and Mrs. Millard Shadduck and family."

So is son Millard Berkley Shadduck, born Nov 18, 1900 in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, dying March 13, 1969 in Belleville. Leslie Hiram Shadduck - Apr 9, 1906 - Jan 6., 1999 is also buried there. Millard married Mary Katherine Heater in 1927, and after he died she married Leslie.

Minnie Olive Shadduck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Millard Berkley Palmer, was born April 24, 1875, at Nuckolls County, Neb., and passed away from this life on June 8, 1955, at the home of her daughter, Mr and Mrs. W. E. Brant, at Belleville, Kan., at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 10 days.

She was united in marriage to Fred Leslie Shadduck. To this union were born two daughters and three sons. The family moved to the Republic community in 1924, where she had made her home until near the time of her death. She joined the Republic United Brethren church in 1938.

Minnie Olive Shadduck was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, two sisters, two brothers and her parents. She is survived by one daughter, Rose Brant of Belleville; three sons, Millard of Republic, Leslie of Belleville, and William of San Ysidro, Cal.; one brother, Walter Palmer of Hepler; two sisters, Lida Mosier of Davenport, Neb., and Emma Reynolds of Gering, Neb.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 8 in the Evangelical United Brethren church in Republic, conducted by the Rev. Lowell Thuma. Interment was in Washington cemetery.

In 1901 Charles Shadduck timber-claimed 141 acres in 5, 1S 46W (just a few miles northwest of Fred's claim)

In 1902 Charles G. Shadduck "of Newmire, Colo." was a witness for a claim in Telluride Colorado. (San Miguel County, later called Vanadium)

1902 "J.B. Twist and wife and two little girls are in Telluride today from the Silver Pick. Chas. Shadduck, a neighbor, drove them in."

In 1904 Charles proved up on 160 acres in San Miguel County - very close to the Wilson Mesa area where the Poplin and Hollman people are buried.

Charles G. Shaddock married Nora E. Hopkins in Montrose Jan 24, 1909.

In 1910 Montrose County Charles G. "Shodebuck" is a teamster doing odd jobs. - he and Nora have been married a year. (In 1900 Montrose County Nora E. Hopkins, born Dec 1858 Missouri, is married two years but no spouse, and living with (probably) sister Mary Barnes - Nov 1846 Indiana - and her husband George 73 married 23 years - in Horsefly precinct, Montrose County. Maybe the Mary E. Bolts marrying George W. Barnes July 3, 1876 in Knox County, Missouri....

In the same property is Charles C. Reed, perhaps Mary's son- born November 1862 in Missouri (one tree said he was born September 22, 1865 in Bourbon County, Kansas.
, with Jennie Dec 1875 Utah, and daughters Alta 9 and Mary 2, both born in Colorado.

In 1920 city of Montrose, Colorado - Charles is a laborer, 45, with Nora E. 49.

The Schmid Ranch on Wilson Mesa includes "the Shadduck homestead purchased in 1923"

In 1930 Montrose Charles "Thadeluck" and Nora don't have occupations - they said their first marriage was at ages 36 and 34 respectively, which would be about 1910.

Charles G. Shadduck is in 1940 Montrose County, 71, born in Pennsylvania, to Nora E. 73, Missouri. He's buried in Grand View, Montrose 1876-1960, as is Nora 1868-1941.
