John A. Grant BIRTH 1850 DEATH 1934 BURIAL Grandview Cemetery Wray, Yuma County, Colorado, USA PLOT Range 7, Block 5, Lot 17, Space 5 MEMORIAL ID 63795611.
"John Alexander Grant, familiarly known as, 'Uncle Alex,' passed away Friday morning, January 19, following a prolonged illness, at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 4 days. He was born March 15, 1850, in Monroe county, Mo. He grew to manhood in his native state. I
n 1864, at the age of 14, he was drafted into the Confederate army and served to the end of the war. On March 18, 1873, Mr. Grant was united in marriage to Miss Henrietta Welch at Paris, Mo. Seven children were born to this union. Five children survive their parents. They are Wallace Grant and Mrs. Virgie Willis of Denver, Mrs. Anna Bell York of Exeter, Calif., Thomas Grant and Mrs. Opal Pickett of Wray. One daughter, Esetlla passed away at the age of five years, and another daughter, Mrs. Fanny Doling, died at McCook, November 27, 1932. Mrs. Grant passed away in 1920.
In the fall of 1892, Mr. Grant, accompanied by his family, came to Wray to reside. He had continued to make this town his home all these years. During his active years he was engaged in contracting and building and it can be truthfully said of him that he was an excellent workman. He was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, and a loyal friend. In recent years, because of the infirmities of old age, he gave up active work but continued to be a familiar personage about town until his last illness forced him to remain in his room. Mr. Grant was a contributor to the development that has taken place in this town and community since that far away day in 1892 when he cast his lot here, because he was master builder of many a farm home as well as of many of the early day residences in Wray. And so there is sincere regret because of the passing of another hardy and useful pioneer, and a friend to man. May he rest in peace.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Hitchcock Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Clark Bower of the Christian church. Burial was in Grandviaw cemetery."
