Corporal Granville Madison Taylor

Son of John Wesley and Ella Rosezalia (McMahill) Taylor of Akron. The family later returned to Taylor County, Iowa where John died in 1938 and Ella in 1954. He was a brother of Nellie May (Taylor) McMahill.

Hold Funeral Service for Drowned Soldier

The following was clipped from a San Diego paper:

Funeral services for Corporal Granville Taylor, Company D, 115th supply train, Camp Kearney, who was drowned at Ocean Beach on May 5 and whose body was recovered May 24, were held last night at the chapel of the Johnson-Saum Company.

Corporal Taylor enlisted on July 4, 1917, at Akron, Colo., joining Company A. Second Colorado infantry. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Taylor, and a sister, Mrs. Earl McMahill, all of whom are residents of Akron.

After the funeral services, the body was escorted to the Santa Fe depot by a guard from the personnel of the supply train. Corporal Remington, brother of Lieutenant Remington, commander of the supply train will accompany the body to Akron, where interment will be made.

In Memory of a Soldier Boy

Granville Madison Taylor was born January 1, 1896 in Taylor County near Bedford, Iowa.

When two years old his parents moved to Omaha, Nebraska; three years later they moved to Spokane, Washington and in 1914 they came to Colorado.

He united with the Adventist faith when 12 years of age. There being no Advent church at this place, he attended church at Platner and was an active member of the Epworth League.

July 4, 1917, he enlisted in Company A, Army National Guard of Akron. They were stationed at Pueblo till September. From there they were sent to Camp Kearny, near San Diego, California. He was drowned May 5, 1918, at Ocean Beach, California where he had gone for an outing.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church at Akron, Colorado by Elder Glass Cock of Colorado Springs assisted by Rev. Springston of Akron.

He leaves to mourn his death, father, mother and a sister Mrs. Earl McMahill, all of Akron.

Notes:

When Granville Taylor registered for the draft in 1917 he said he was age 21, address Akron, Colorado and was born January 1, 1896 in Bedford, Iowa. He was a farmer, self-employed, living 7 miles south of Akron, single, Caucasian, no family listed.
The local board said he was medium height, slender build, brown eyes, dark brown hair and assigned registration no..53.
