Costilla County is one of Colorado's original counties.

About Costilla County

Created in 1861, Costilla is Colorado's oldest permanent settlement area and part of the historic San Luis Valley. Parts of the original county later formed Saguache (1866), Rio Grande (1874), and Alamosa (1913) Counties. The county seat has been San Luis since 1867 (earlier: San Miguel). Communities, churches, and local archives remain rich sources for family history.
