Conejos County was among the first 17 counties created in 1861. It was briefly named Guadalupe County before being renamed for the Spanish word conejo (rabbit), reflecting the area’s abundance of rabbits. The county seat is the unincorporated town of Conejos. Incorporated towns include Manassa, Sanford, La Jara, Antonito, Romeo, Capulin and Conejos; unincorporated communities include Platoro, San Rafael, Ortiz, San Antonio, Mogote, Las Sauces, Lobatos, Cenicero, and others.
