Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Because the northernmost townships of Yuma County are closer to Holyoke than to Yuma or Wray, the Holyoke newspaper had many mentions of the settlers.

"Murraysville" might be a light reference to William C. and Louisa Jane Murray, in sections 8 and 17 of 5N 46W - claimed in 1891

George Collins claimed two quarters, in sections 21 and 22, also in 1891

Fairplay Flume January 8, 1897

Fairplay January 22, 1897 "The County Commissioners petitioned Governeor McIntyre to offer a reward for Oscar Stringham, who killed Oscar (sic) Callaghan near Slaghts in this county.  Governor McIntyre informed the Board that he had laid the matter over for his successor to consider.  But Governor  ...ms had been in office but a few days before Sheriff Wilson had his man in jail."

Riceville was a seven-car siding along a bend in the North Fork of the South Platte River between Shawnee and Cassells, and it was the site of a notorious Park County murder.

It was there that Oscar Stringham allegedly killed Oliver Callahan in the early 1900s while hiding behind bushes. Stringham was later acquitted even though he had confessed.
