Alfred Ralph Brown, Delta County

ALFRED'S BROTHER FRED

Just after noon on Wednesday, the 23d of May, 1906, Fred G. Brown was struck by lightning and instantly killed while at the reservoir at the foot of Mt. Lamborn. Mr. Brown had gone up to inspect the work being done by John Harding and Harvey Emmons. The storm coming up, Mr. Brown commented that they would have to seek shelter and picked up the bridle reins of his horse to mount, when the bolt fell striking him in the side of the head and following his body to the ground. Both of the other men were seriously shocked but soon recovered. Fred was killed instantly. Strange to report his horse was not injured.
Fred G. Brown was born on May 13th, 1870, in Toledo, Ohio. He came to Colorado in 1878 and has resided here continuously every since. On January 1. 1807, he was married to Miss Inez G. Hammond, and to them two children were born, who by this calamity are left fatherless at the tender age of eight years for Wealthy and four for Lucile. Besides his immediate family, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Jennie Marks, of Hoisington, Kansas, one brother, Ralph Brown, of this place, and a half brother, Joe Brown, who also resides in Paonia.
The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday of this week, conducted by the I. O. O. F. and M. W. A., both of which orders Mr. Brown was affiliated with.
Mr. Brown has prospered in Paonia, having acquired a fine ranch on Minnesota creek, part of which is now in orchard, as well as getting together quite a bunch of cattle. In fact, he was so situated as to mark the beginning of a very quiet and comfortable home life with none of the necessary privations and toil through which he passed in the years of his early settlement. It seems doubly hard that this good citizen should be taken away from his family in this sudden and shocking manner, when there seems to be so many reasons why he should live.
The heartfelt sympathy of a host of his friends and acquaintances is with the bereaved relatives."

November 1906 "' Dr. Hick went to Pueblo Tuesday, having in custody Ralph Brown, a young man from Paonia who was adjudged insane in the county court."

June 1909 "Word reached Paonia relatives today of the, died of Ralph Brown, half brother of Joe Brown of this place, at the Pueblo asylum last night. He had been failing the past few days though the end came unexpectedly. F'urther particulars have not yet been received as Joe is over at Redstone and will not be able to reach there before Sunday."

"Alfred Ralph Brown was born in the city of Dayton, Ohio, February 26, 1H76. While still a boy he came to Colorado and since then spent the greater part of the time in and near Paonia. A year or so ago he went to Pueblo and his sister remained with him part of the time. A few weeks ago he began failing noticeably and was taken to the hospital where he died, June 10, 1909. The remains were brought to Paonia by his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Marks, and his half brother, Joe Brown, of this place.
The funeral services were conducted from the Christian church by the Woodmen of the World, of which he was a faithful member, and Rev. J. K. Hester, pastor of the church. The body was laid to rest in the Bethlehem cemetery close to that of his brother, Fred, who died a few years ago. The only near relatives living are his sister, Mrs. S. T. Marks, of Hoisington, Kans, a half-brother, Joe Brown, of this place, and his brother Fred’s children."
