Hints for Write an Effective Query

  1. Put surnames in CAPITAL letters, to draw attention to your query.

  2. Limit each query post to three or four surnames maximum.  It is absolutely acceptable to post more than one query.

  3. Short paragraphs get the most attention (but make sure you do not skimp on quality of information).  8-10 maximum lines is a good rule of thumb for query size.

  4. Use WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE in your queries.  The more information you provide as well as more specific information, will heed the best results.  Use specific dates (birth, married, deaths) or locations, when known.

Example of an effective query:

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Tranquilino G. ROMERO, born circa 1852 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  He moved to the Alamosa, Colorado area around 1905 and was married to Eduvigen JARAMILLO, born circa 1862 in El Rito, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico.  Known children are Rebecca, Vicentita, Gumecindo, and Jose Maria ROMERO, all born in the Alamosa and Conejos areas.  Tranquilino died in Alamosa in 1916.  Rebecca ROMERO was married to Dionisio GALLEGOS in 1917 (he died in 1919) and she then married Antonio Maria MARTINEZ in 1922 in Alamosa.  If anyone is researching this family, I am looking for ancestors as well as dependents.  I also have information to share.
